What should African leaders do?? Africa as a testing ground for vaccines against Covid-19

The video below depicts two french doctors, Jean-Paul Mira and Camille Locht, expressing the idea of testing the vaccines against the corona virus in Africa since it lacks the resources to prevent the virus. These comments made on the 1st of April, triggered an outrage from a large crowd leading to the director of WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and few top African soccer players to express their dismay.

In an interview, Ghebreyesus states that “Africa can not and will not be a testing ground for any vaccine. We will follow all the rules to test any vaccine or therapeutics all over the world using exactly the same rule, whether it’s in Europe, Africa or wherever.”

“We will use the same protocol and if there is a need to be tested and is well to treat human beings the same way equally. The hangover from a colonial mentality has to stop. WHO will not allow this to happen.”

It is without a doubt that the question of racism and a colonial mindset is raised. Africa has the fewest amount of cases, yet it came as a suggestion to be used as a testing ground. This to say, the continent the least equipped, although with the lowest amount of cases, should be the guinea pigs for the ones that are more in need. The word choice from a head of intensive care, “if i should be provocative",is a clear demonstration of his intent. While the head of research at the National Institute of Health and Medical Research, states “you are right.” This conversation proves the white supremacy mindset that is still present in society.

What Should The African leaders do?

Congo’s head of national biological institute, Jean-Jacques Muyembe confirmed that they are prepared to take part in the testing of the Covid-19 vaccines. The citizens however viewed this as a leader not looking out for the best interest of it’s citizens.

Muyembe did mention that the vaccines would be for volunteers. The citizens doubt the trustworthiness of it’s leaders as is the case with few other African countries where corruption is high. An example of this would be in the case in Nigeria in 2003, where citizens and even leaders grew suspicious of the polio vaccine, leading to a boycott towards the World Health Organization and leaders of the country.

African leaders should allow anyone who volunteers and not blind sight it’s citizens by unwillingly testing the vaccines on them. It is important to be transparent which is what Muyembe did. At least now, the citizens are aware of the circumstances. This is a global pandemic and everyone should have the right to decide whether they are willing to test the vaccines or not.
